Bats in the Attic in New Hampshire: The Law, the Risks and Safe Bat Removal

By Middleeast Pest Control · New Hampshire pest control and wildlife removal

Bats are valuable — one eats thousands of insects a night — and several New Hampshire species are in decline. That is why bat removal has rules.

Timing

Exclusion is generally avoided from mid-spring through late summer, when flightless pups are in the roost. Outside that window, one-way devices let bats leave and prevent re-entry. Our bat removal and exclusion service is scheduled around those dates.

Risks

Accumulated guano can host histoplasmosis spores, and any bat found in a room where someone was sleeping should be treated as a possible rabies exposure — call your doctor. Do not handle bats with bare hands.

The fix

Dusk count, install exclusion devices, seal every other gap with mesh (bats will find a secondary hole), then remove guano and replace insulation. Done right it is permanent; see wildlife exclusion.
